Usui Sensei studied Buddhism and Reiki was born of Buddhist practice. The similarity between the Reiki Precepts and the Eight Fold Path although striking, is not then surprising. The original Buddhist texts (suttas) were written in Pali, and later translated into Sanskrit. Like Reiki, Buddhism evolved into several branches.
Reiki is both learned and experienced. You cannot become a Reiki practitioner just by reading a book. The same is true for Buddhism: reading the suttas and actually practicing the teachings (Dhamma) is the only way. The suttas appear quite intimidating on first sight, but they are easy reading. Actually fully comprehending and experiencing them is a harder, slower process than reading them!
The Reiki Precepts and Buddhism both promote mindfulness: that is being fully conscious of the self, at all times, on all levels. At first this may sound a little self-obsessed; but as we grow spiritually, and begin to recognise that on an energetic level we are all one; we realise becoming fully self aware is the most responsible action we can take, for the good of all.
You will note that ‘right intention’ is part of the eight fold path. Intention is crucially important in Reiki practice. You must always work from a place of unconditional love and compassion. Your intent must always be ‘for the highest good’.
Reiki practice is greatly enhanced when coupled with Buddhist practice. Those of you who are fully committed to self-improvement will benefit from studying both practices.
Buddhist Dhamma at its most basic level says:
The Four Noble Truths:
All life is suffering
The cause of suffering is craving
The end of suffering comes with the release from craving
Release comes from following the Eight Fold Path
The Eight Fold Path:
right understanding
right intention
right speech
right action
right livelihood
right effort
right mindfulness
right concentration
